Don't Blame Astrology: Astrology & Self-Sabotage

I hear it all the time in therapy sessions. . .

"I do [insert behavior] because I'm a [insert sun sign].

or

" I am [insert trait] because I'm a [insert sun sign].

Funny enough, I only hear this line of logic used when someone is trying to justify a behavior or trait that is unhealthy or harmful to themselves and/or others.

Before I go on, I want to make it clear that I respect astrology and consider myself to be a novice astrologer. I have studied astrology and many other spiritual sciences for several years.

As a holistic therapist, novice astrologer, and self-proclaimed mystic, I invite an incorporation of astrology and other holistic self-knowledge systems such as human design and cardology into therapy sessions to aid in self-exploration. . .as long as this work is aligned and advantageous to the goals, growth, and well-being of the client.

That being said,

I am also critical of the ways that I see astrology being used to excuse problematic behavior and avoid honest self-reflection, accountability, and positive change.

Over the years, the once fringe field of astrology has exploded in popularity. This popularity has resulted in a gross commodification, oversimplification, and co-optation of this ancient knowledge system.

Astrology is a powerful and sacred tool for self-awareness, self-transformation, and self-actualization.

Your celestial makeup is your energetic blueprint and a compass that provides key insights and guidance to help you fulfill your highest purpose and cultivate a life of deep fulfillment while on this earthly plane. Astrology gives you insight into your gifts and strengths, and perhaps most importantly, into your pain points, challenges, and areas for growth and refinement. The purpose of this knowledge is not to justify your self-defeating, unhealthy, maladaptive traits and behavior, but to support you in engaging with these parts of yourself with awareness, compassion, and mastery so that they don't become barriers to your self-actualization.

So, by all means, if you have taken an interest in astrology, continue to learn and study your astrological chart, but be aware of whether you're using this knowledge to sabotage your growth or to aid it.
